Backflow Device Installations

Backflow Device Installation & Repair in Tigard and Beaverton

Protecting your drinking water starts with proper backflow prevention. At Loves Plumbing, we provide professional installation and repair of backflow prevention devices for homes and businesses throughout Tigard, Beaverton, and the greater Portland metro area.

These systems are required by code in most commercial buildings — and increasingly common in residential settings — to prevent contaminated water from flowing backward into the clean water supply.

What Is a Backflow Device?

A backflow prevention device is a plumbing assembly that keeps your clean water supply safe by preventing water from reversing direction in your pipes. Backflow can occur when there’s a sudden drop in water pressure — like during a main break, hydrant use, or heavy irrigation cycle — which can pull contaminated water from sprinkler lines, boilers, or other connected systems back into your home or the public water main.

Backflow devices are designed to stop that from happening, ensuring only clean, safe water flows into your faucets and fixtures.

Common Types of Backflow Prevention Devices

Different setups call for different types of protection. Loves Plumbing installs and replaces all major backflow prevention assemblies, including:

1. Vacuum Breakers (AVB & PVB)

These are commonly found on outdoor hose bibs, irrigation systems, and sprinkler lines.

  • Atmospheric Vacuum Breaker (AVB): Prevents back siphonage by allowing air into the line if pressure drops.
  • Pressure Vacuum Breaker (PVB): Similar to an AVB but can handle continuous pressure, making it ideal for lawn irrigation systems.

Vacuum breakers are cost-effective and protect against contamination in low- to medium-risk applications.

2. Double Check Valve Assembly (DCVA or Double Check)

A double check assembly provides two layers of protection, using two independently acting check valves to prevent backflow.

  • Often used for commercial buildings, fire sprinkler systems, and internal water systems.
  • Provides protection from pollutants (non-health hazards), not severe contaminants.
  • Compact, durable, and commonly installed in meter boxes or mechanical rooms.

3. Reduced Pressure Backflow Assembly (RPBA)

The RPBA is the highest level of protection and is required anywhere there’s a high risk of contamination.

  • Includes two check valves and a pressure relief valve between them.
  • Designed to discharge water when a backflow condition occurs, keeping contaminants out of the supply.
  • Commonly installed on commercial properties, restaurants, irrigation systems with chemical injectors, and large residential properties with multiple water sources.

These assemblies are built for critical protection and are mandatory in many code-governed installations.

Our team handles:

  • New backflow preventer installations for irrigation, commercial, and multi-unit systems

  • Relocation or modification for remodels or new construction
  • Repairs to leaking or frozen backflow assemblies

We make sure your system is properly sized, installed to Oregon code, and protected from freezing or physical damage.

(Note: Loves Plumbing does not currently offer backflow testing services. Testing must be completed by a certified tester after installation.)
